There are new markieting ideas coming around, so look for more twitter activity at @inkstainedsuccu
And more blog content at better times.
We're not twiddling our thumbs, waiting for edits to come back.
Saturday, the bridge of the airship was a hive of industry. There are 6 Hats of Cunning +1 in that pile. Two tails and 4 wooden spoons also got made, but they aren't quite done. We're planning to use this to finance art covers.

My Sexy Saturday: That Sexy Time of Day
There are people who make love in the morning. There are people who make love at night. Or maybe it’s the afternoon. Whenever it is, it’s that sexy time of day.

Seven Sexy Paragraphs
Rivna saw her father to his room. She brought him tea and bread and refused to leave until he’d eaten it. Doe arranged some blankets on the floor, half-heartedly trying to eavesdrop and chastising herself for it. It was deep into the night when Rivna stepped into the front room and eased the door closed behind her.
“Are you hungry?” she asked.
“No,” said Doe.
Rivna blew out the lamps in the front room one by one. Doe heard her shuck off her clothes, and then Rivna’s warm body was next to her own beneath the blankets.
“What was all that about?” Doe asked.
Rivna curled around her and sank her face into Doe’s hair. “No one ever knows. Let’s get some sleep."
“What did he mean, have I gotten myself out of trouble?”

Diversity in Secondary Fantasy
by B R Sanders
I’m a big believer in diverse books. We need them, and we need diverse creators. I believe this from the bottom of my heart. Some of the push back that I’ve gotten when I broach this topic is that I write secondary world fantasy--I write about elves in worlds that are not our own. So how can diversity be relevant to that? It’s all fictional anyway, and the people aren’t even real people, huh?
Well, I’ll show you how. Challenge accepted. The entirety of my novel Resistance is set in the City of Mages--just a single city. That’s it, one city. The two characters in the excerpt below, Shandolin (the lead character) and Shoket, are both elves, and both have lived in the City of Mages their entire lives.
Gradually, the skin of the people on the street moved from pale and freckled like Doe’s to gray and smooth like Shoket’s. As he veered off from the alleys, he walked with a thoughtless confidence. Shandolin realized he knew where they were going.
“You spent much time here?” she asked him.
“A bit, yeah. The Brotherhood raised me up, right, but it made sense to get me in good with the tinkers, seeing as I’m at least half, if I’m a drop. I went to this schoolhouse. Went here all day and then ran jobs at night with Rivvie ‘til I finished my education.”
“You think that bard was telling the truth?” Doe asked. “You think Moshel’s in the schoolhouse?”
“If I was as Semadran as he is, and as hunted as he is, that’s exactly where I’d go. You know Moshel this well, and you really don’t know shit about the tinkers, do you?”
“I really don’t,” Doe said. “He won’t tell me. None but him talk to me. Secretive bunch.”
“They are, yeah.” Shoket pointed to a spire peeping out from the corner of a decrepit stone apartment building. The spire was fitted to a domed roof made of wood polished so that it gleamed in the harsh sunlight. It was not a building the Semadrans had inherited from the City, but one they had built themselves.
“That’s the schoolhouse. Tinkers are used to living close together, isolated in one tiny neighborhood. They’re too poor to have much in the way of markets. They’re not religious enough to build temples. The schoolhouse is the heart of any Semadran neighborhood: the best built, the biggest, and the most protected. You’re in trouble? Find the schoolhouse. You’re lost? Find the schoolhouse. You’re hungry? Find the schoolhouse. You’re a mouthy shaper who’s got a history of pissing off the Qin but the neighborhood loves you anyway and you need a place to lie low? Find the schoolhouse. If he’s not in there, I’d bet even money he’s out of the City altogether.”
Ok, so what do we see here? Something that basically anyone who’s ever lived in a large city knows--that there are ethnic/racial pockets within a city. Shandolin may have lived in the City her entire life, but the City she knows is not necessarily the City Shoket knows because she is one kind of elf and he is another kind of elf.
It’s easy to write secondary worlds in fantasy without any granularity or depth. It’s easy to build cultures in broad brush strokes with no depth or shading. But often what is easy to write does not necessarily make good writing. In creating the City--and its denizens--I wanted something that felt real. I wanted something that felt lived in, that felt like it had a history and had a future.
Cities are peculiar, organic things with cultures and sub-cultures that sometimes mix and blend and sometimes don’t. Shandolin, who is mouthy and strident and arrogant and passionate, was a perfect vehicle to explore all those little cold and hot spots. She barrels in, politeness or not. Sometimes that causes trouble for her, sometimes it doesn’t, but always it means she learns something. Always, at least, she’s curious.
Even restricting the setting just to a single city, I was able to embed a lot of diversity in Resistance. Shandolin visits a number of different ethnocultural pockets like this one throughout the course of the book. She also travels up and down the class ladder.
But beyond just in-universe explorations of diversity, Resistance puts its diverse characters front-and-center. The book passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors, and also interrogates alternative genders. Pretty much every leading and secondary character of note who kicks ass is queer. Like super queer. Many of the characters, like Shoket, are intentionally coded as people of color. Resistance is not a tourism-tokenization type book; it is a book that empowers and uplifts diversity in fiction. It just does it with elves instead of humans.

Blurb:
Resistance has many faces, and one of them is Shandolin’s.
When she finds her friend brutally murdered, Shandolin decides to fight instead of run–but her only hope of survival is a takeover of the City government. Shandolin draws everyone she loves into the fray with her: her assassin lover, Rivna; her mentor, Moshel; and her best friend, Kel.
Apart, they are weak, but together Shandolin and her friends, lovers and fellows may be just strong enough to save their skins and the skins of the other elves in the City.
Seven Sexy Paragraphs:
“You won’t let me die in an alley,” Doe said quietly.
“I won’t. The thing about the killer’s hit, though, is for the few that get away with it, the few that survive it, it’s only a matter of time before they go looking for it again. Easily half the bastards I get hired to take out are idiots looking for a second fix.”
“I’m not like that, Riv.”
“Really? Because you’ve just turned this whole City upside down. Back there in the House, you got the blood-lust crazy eyes and snatched a knife out of my hand to do in the Arbiter yourself. That wasn’t part of the plan, Doe.”
“Well, no, but—hey, I did not have blood-lust crazy eyes!”
Rivna sighed and looked away. The morning was utterly silent. The shopkeeps and pedal-driven sidewalk stalls wouldn’t start hawking their wares for another hour, at least. Some of that delicious euphoria began to wane and Doe was left with a stinging throat, throbbing thighs and the dull, painful knowledge that Rivvie was right about the blood-lust crazy eyes.
“You’re worried about me,” Doe said softly.

From "Expectations"
Durak bought Cori on a penal slave auction and has assumed custody of the little hacker. Now that the job for which Cori was bought has been accomplished, they settle in to see what else can be done.
Your Seven Sexy paragraphs:
Cori smiled and took Durak’s hand, leading him from around the table and up against his body. "Hope that military style is familiar to you, solider boy.” He leaned up and took a kiss from Durak’s lips, insistent and almost controlling as he wound his fingers through the short hair on Durak’s head.
“Want me to call you Sir too?” Durak said. “I’m good at taking orders. And if that’s what you like, make free.”
“Sir sounds good.” That little wicked grin sparkled in the boy’s eyes as he pushed Durak back on the lounge and mounted him, stealing his very breath with kisses. With deft fingers, he pulled Durak’s clothes from him piece by piece, exposing just how much of his body was made of metal these days.
Mechanics criss-crossed Durak’s torso. Durak took pride in keeping up his muscled flesh. His arm whirred a little as he shucked off his shirt with Cori’s help, and there was a certain joy in Cori’s eyes to discover that the mechanics extended below his belt.
“Now that’s definitely new to me.” Cori traced fingertips down the shining metal cock, which stood straight and strong at attention.
“Optional equipment.” Durak pulled him down for another kiss. “Had to pay for it myself. And yeah, that’s part of your maintenance duties.”
“Maybe if I tie you down first.” Cori gripped him firmly, sending little ripples down the nerve analogs to Durak’s brain, immense pleasure with just the slightest hint of pain. “You can own me all you like out there. But this. Oh, soldier boy. This is mine.” He slid his fingers further back to find that the blast that had taken this part from Durak hadn’t reached the back and gently tested it with a fingertip. “And so is this.”

Some lovers will do anything to keep their beloved happy. But the lengths Calvin goes to in "Bodies!" are extreme.
Your Seven Sexy Paragraphs:
From "Bodies!" by Damon Norko
By the next week, Calvin had changed again. He was much more slender now, smooth and hairless. Despite the charms of the young body, Marta could not conceal her disappointment.
“What’s wrong, darling?” murmured Calvin, sliding through the sheets.
“You’re looking younger than me,” Marta said, feigning an excuse. “I feel like an old woman. Like a cougar.”
Calvin laughed, and nuzzled her with his nose, a sort of mini-Romanesque beak. “You can change too, you know,” answered Calvin. “You don’t have to age at all. That’s one of the perks of being married to the head of Bio-Renovation Industries!”
“I rather enjoy myself the way I am,” said Marta.
“There are lines on your face,” Calvin told her, and he traced the lines with his finger.
“Why, thank you dear,” said Marta. “Just what every girl wants to hear. And of course, being married to you has nothing to do with it.”

From "A Very Emotional Scene"
The space station named Euripides 9, more commonly referred to as “The Last Stop,” was as far away from Earth as Madeline could get with what little money she’d left home with. It was the last waystation before crossing a mind-numbing chasm of empty space that stood between the cluster of solar systems that humanity had already dominated, and the next cluster of solar systems that humanity was now conquering.
It had taken Madeline close to a month to make it out as far as she had. She sat quietly in her quarters on a transport ship, staring at the walls day after day, with only the hum of the engines and the occasional whoosh of an FTL Push Drive to keep her company when she wasn’t taking in a rare meal. She disembarked at the next waystation and boarded another transport for the next leg of her journey, and she had a new room in which to sit quietly and stare at a new wall.
She expected something to happen at any time. She didn’t know if she would cry, or laugh hysterically, or just snap out of it and come to her senses. Every day when she woke, she wondered if this would be the day that her catatonic daze would end and the reality of it all would explode around her. She would contact her parents and they would send her the funds to return home.
But nothing ever happened. Days and weeks went by, and all she did was stare and wait. Whatever it was she was doomed to eventually feel, it seemed to be less inevitable than she had expected. The emotions never came. Madeline had reached the end of her journey, and the end of her money, and the numbness had never faded.
And so, she was seeing an onion about a job.
“I’m a chef, of sorts,” Harper continued. “I create entertainment for the humans that travel through here, and the Tegalians that crew the station come to feed on the emotions that my entertainment elicits. It’s a very symbiotic relationship that has made me very wealthy and rather well-known in many Tegalian circles.”
“That’s nice,” Madeline said, assuming he was expecting her to say something.
“Did you do any performing on Earth?” Harper asked her.
Madeline shrugged. “Sure.”
“Have you ever performed a sexual act for an audience?” Harper asked.
Madeline blinked. “Pardon?”
“I understand humans are rather private about their sexual practices,” it said. “I’ve found that including sexual activity in my productions generates very strong emotions. It’s a very enticing mixture of excitement and revulsion. It’s quite a spicy flavor. Have you ever had sex on stage before?”
Madeline thought about this for a moment. The numbness in her core kept her from being shocked or repulsed by the question, which left her with only a nagging feeling that there must be something lost in the translation.
“You want me to have sex on stage?” she asked. “In front of a live audience?”
“That is correct,” Harper said.
